Permafrost

Permafrost or perennially frozen ground is defined as soil, rock or sediment that remains below 0°C for more than two consecutive years. Permafrost varies in coverage (i.e. continuous, sporadic, discontinuous) and ice content resulting in different responses to climate change and impacts on society and the build environment.

Permafrost occurs sporadically in the Municipality of Alaska and Whitehorse, and is more widespread in the Fairbanks North Star Borough. Thawing permafrost has negatively impacted homes, infrastructure, and agriculture in all three communities.

The goal of this project is to create a permafrost thaw map similar to the permafrost forecast and modeling map for northwest Alaska from UAF's Geophysical Institute.
